i am trying to get the wiring simplified to the point where i can start it. i unhooked the lights, trying to get the switch/starter/battery hooked up. The points/condenser wiring looks ok. which terminal on starter needs grounded/hooked to positive/negative? the wiring diagrams dont help much because the switch is not original.

the pics are in the stuck &troubled photos, sorry there not in post i tried it and got a red X.

thanks, redbone.

also, just for future reference, sites like Photobucket or Picturetrail are free pic hosting sites. I use em, very easy.

Yikes! Look at the battery cable hooked to the key switch. Looks like someone wired around the solenoid and has full cranking amperage going through the switch. Just my 2 cents, looks like El Toro has supplied a good basic diagram. If it were me, I'd rip out everything, and start over. New correct color wires, terminals, and a soldering gun. But thats just me.

I thought I had a Kohler diagram somewhere since I never throw anything away. This may help you in getting it wired correctly. Hal

heres the pic of the switches, the one with thick black wires comes from key switch, thin green wires come from on/off switch, one wire is connected to positive terminal of coil, other thin wire jut dangling.

i would hook up a battery and see but i dont want to burn up starter.

I have a starter/generator on my Wards tractor, but it has the 14hp B&S engine. I'm not sure if I have a diagram for your engine. Here's one on the Kohler. Hal

i think all that around the coil is ok, it checked out on the wiring diagram. but what about from the switch to battery to starter/generator?

You need to have a hot wire from the ignition switch to the coil and if the battery is neg grounded you need to connect the wire from the switch to + terminal on the coil and from the neg terminal on the coil to the points. Here are some of of your pictures. Hal

there are two black wires from key switch, not hooked to anything with round connectors on the end.

the coil seems to be wired right, so i'm going to back up from there. connected to the positive terminal on the coil is a thin wire that runs to an on/off switch on the dash, NOT the key switch.

from that switch runs another thin wire that i presume must be hooked to the positive black wire to the battery? then there is a thin wire running off the generator starter that's not hooked to anything. here's another pic of the starter wires, the red isn't hooked to anything.

Does this tractor have a solenoid? That red wire
may go on the A terminal on the generator as shown in the drawing I sent you. It may go to the solenoid as shown in the drawing or to the start switch shown in the upper drawing. You need to determine which drawing covers your tractor. If one these diagrams covers your tractor I think I would redo all the wiring. The upper drawing used a starter switch. The bottom one used a key type starter/ignition switch. That red wire may be used on the A terminal to make the engine crank. Your + battery cable is connected to the F terminal and it can come from the solenoid or from a start switch. I would replace one wire at a time. Hal
