i have a decision to make. the carb on my 1968 wheel horse commando needs cleaned and rebuilt or replaced. there is a carb kit at M&D for $30, a new carb's gonna run over one hundred bucks.

this carb is gummed up pretty bad, you can smell the old gas reeking from it.

What do you think? clean and rebuild (and pray) or stay safe and fork over big buck$ for a new carb.

thanks, redbone

thanks guys for alerting me to the ripoff. Usually M&D is reasonable. I went onto jack's small engines site and ordered one for $7, going to try to rebuild it, not really sure what to do but i need to learn and got to start somewhere. plus i found the engine service manual free on kohler's webite. 8 pages on carb alone. what a find.

thanks again guys.

if the body isn't warped, and the throttle shaft doesnt wobble in the bushings, it should be rebuildable with no trouble.

What all comes in this carburetor rebuild kit? Check the float to make sure it does not have a hole in it and the mounting ears for being warped on the carburetor. How you spend the money is a matter of how comfortable you feel about your rebuilding capabilities. A 100 bucks is cheap if all you have to do is bolt the carburetor up and adjust, but if rebuilding a caburetor is just another day to you (or you want to learn how) then buy the kit.

strip it down to it's basic elements...get some liquid and spray B-12 from Walmart or where ever and remove all the rubber and plastic parts, soak, spray, blow out with compressed air and it'll be good to go.

$30.00 for a Kohler car rebuild kit is robbery, they sell for less than $12.00
