I just aquired a Gravely Tractor L, it had 90wt. oil in it. I got it cleaned out and am needing to know capacity as this is also going into the gear box. I will not get a manuel for awhile and want to be safe. I also am close to the Kansas City area. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Deb

My Kohler,JD 214 was doing the same thing. The plug gap was set at .025..specs called for .035. The change fixed mine.

Deb,

I use my old L so I replaced the original Blue filter with a newer setup to allow the use of a spin-on oil filter. I know my '60 LI has the spin-on but I don't know if it's original. My guess is sometime in the fifties the switch was made.

Deb,

On the older tractors I have that aren't equipped with a dipstick, there is either a bolt or a petcock on the right side toward the front. You remove the bolt or open the petcock and pour in oil until it comes out this opening signifying the crankcase is full.If you have further questions post again or post at the Gravely club at http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/gravelyclub

Rich, Thanks for the good advice. Took about a quart out thru the petcock, but it`s probably needing rings cause it still smokes bad. When did they start putting oil filters on? Mine doesn`t seem to have one. I will try to get on the Yahoo Chat later. Deb

usually the oil is drained from the lowest axle housing bolt hole and the "plug" is the level it should be at. if the tractor seems in good shape try a ring job and get 20+ yrs. from it c-ya
