just picked up a decent c-160 automatic with hydro lift. what is the correct fluid for the rear end and lift. i have seen some mixed reviews about using type-F , dextron III, and 10w30. this one looks like it has hydraulic oil in it and the tractor seems sluggish compared to my 877. i run dextron trans fluid in my 877 with no promblems....yet.

The manual recommends 10W-30 in the rear and hyd. The filter is a PH16. The sunstrand variable volume pump has a laminated swash plate (steel and brass) the brass side of the plate will become worn over time and will cause the pistons to leak which will cause loss of pressure and volume from pump. The plate can be lapped to reface plate needs to be flat within .001 in 6 inches with about a 128 rms finish. Parts ase very hard to find but some older Toro/Wheel Horse dealers may have gaskets for pump.
I have a 1976 C-160 and have used the **** out of it and is still the best mower I have owned.

should i use a synthedic 10w30?. and whats the best way to get the system drained out to convert it to 10w30?. also is the hydro relief valve the slotted stud on the left side of the pump?. now i wonder if i should convert my 877 hydro to 10w30. the 877 sounds like it"s really laboring and it does"nt like to move to good untill its fully warmed up.

Perry - synthic 10W-30 should be OK to use in your C160. The drain plug is at the bottom of the transmision, you will not get all of the old oil out of the pump and transmision. The sloted stud on the left side of the valve body is a releif valve, loosen the valve and the oil bypasses the valve body so you can roll or move the tractor without running the pump.
