I've got an old john deer 111 with a briggs 12.5 horse i/c. I think it's thrown a rod. Is it worth it for me to rebuild the engine put a new piston and connecting rod ect and or does anyone know where one could get a replacement engine for this type of mower without spending a ton of money.

thanks Cameron Brand Oregon

you can get a 14.5hp to put in for 389.95 plus shipping. that is a common engine in your deere, just has a differant charging system.

Wow Great bunch of responses really appreciate it all the information.

I was able to get an engine 12.5 horse i/c b/s
same model number off a guy who deals in old and new mowers. Hopefully the shaft diameter is the same. but it runs and the price was right. Hopefully I can get a few years out of it.

A exact replacement engine model number will be a 21B907, But I couldn't tell the exact type number because the type number you posted is numbers short. Should be four digits dash a letter and a number.

Try carroll stream motors. there was a guy on here a few months back that put a small diesel engine on a 112. he had pictures on here to show it and it looked good. I e-mailed him and he told me it was working very well.

My experience is rebuilding Briggs engines is shaky at best. Hard to get a good hone on the cylinder, parts add up quickly. If the rod is broken, its usually due to low oil, which seizes the rod to the crank, which ruins the crank. If the throttle shaft is wobbly in the carb, the carb must be replaced, which is also expensive. If the carb is OK, a shortblock will work, IF you install it yourself. shop time will eat up any savings and more.
Im sure the Deere guys will chime in if this is a good tractor and worth the repairs.

I spoke too soon. Smallenginewarehouse.com says nothing available, no shortblocks, no repower engines.

A friend gave me a B&S 12 hp engine with a broken conn rod. I opened it up, and surprise of surprises--- the rod cap had broken, but did not score the crankshaft, or break anything else! So, i ordered a new conn rod, and several gaskets. It'll go on one of my Snapper RER's! Rustyj
