I have an older John Deere 300 with the 16 hp kohler engine. My problem is when the light switch is turned on the engine dies. If you turn the switch off the engine continues to run. Has anyone else had this problem and can tell my how to fix it? Thanks, Jack

Something is shorted in the lighting system, causing the main circuit breaker to trip when you turn on the lights, cutting off spark to the engine. (POSSIBLY, it could just be a weak circuit breaker, or a poor connection at the circuit breaker.)

It COULD be the light switch, more likely there is a pinched or bare wire between the light switch and the headlights, or somewhere under the rear fender deck, on it's way to the taillights.

You could try unplugging the headlights at the plug in the engine area (yellow wire), and the tailights, up under the rear of the fender deck, to eliminate the lights themselves as the source of the short. From there, you'll have to simply examine the wires fro damage, or being pinched between metal parts.

Gotta add one more possibility... a bad ignition switch, or dirty/corroded/burned connections at the back of the ignition switch.

Bob, Thanks for the information so far. I replaced the old ignition switch with a new one, I also wired in a new connector. I follow the light wire but did not see a place where it could be shorting. Thanks,
Jack
