Kohler K321. Got spark, fuel. Won't start. When I put a bit of gas in the spark plug hole, or spray a bit of starting fluid, it only backfires. Suggestions, anyone?
Thanks,
Steve

Is this engine a magneto or battery ignition? Spark plug should be a H-10C Champion gapped a .025. If the ignition is battery CHECK to make sure you have the coil polarity right.

I believe it is battery. It has points, condenser, coil, solenoid. Strangely enough, I can"t find in the engine service manual the right polarity for the coil. I just copied how another Kohler engine is set up.

Can you offer advise in this area?
Thanks, Steve

If your battery is negative grounded the small wire from the small negative terminal on the coil
should go to the points. Hal

I've had the plug at .025 and .035...the service manual calls for a .035 battery (?) gap. I've never seen the engine run. The guy I bought it from said he used it, and it ran fine, but he couldn't get spark. I got spark, but still no run. I'll have to check into the timing.
Thanks

Does that engine have that compression release? It may be holding the valve open. Hal

Yes, the service manual says it does. Sounds like I might be learning the inside of a Kohler.

My B&S manual shows an arrow on the flywheel and an another arrow near the armature that need to be aligned for the timing. Kohler may something similar. Hal

It sounds like the timing may be off like a woodruff key may be sheared slightly. Are you using the correct sparkplug for that engine and gapped at .025"? Did it ever run before since you've had it? Hal

I thought I already replied. Oh well. I've never seen it run. Previous owner said it ran well last year, but could get no spark this year. I got spark, but now this problem. I've gapped the plug at .025 and .035, tried two different new plugs, changed the plug wire.

To set the points I turned the engine till the points were open fully, then used a feeler gauge to set them to .020. That's their max opening.

How do I check the timing?
Thanks,

I don't have a shop manual on Kohler engines, but I do on B&S engines and it has the procedure in there for those engines. Some of the people that post here may have a manual with the procedure. I can post a copy of the procedure for the B&S engines if you want to see it. If you have a Kohler dealer in your area he should be able to zerox you a copy. Hal
PS: I would bring the piston to TDC on the compression stroke and see if both valves are closed.

I have the service manual...will have to read about it. I was hoping to check the timing from outside the engine.
