Rebuild this 20 year old lawn tractor. 18 horse briggs. replaced everything I could internally however I didnt need to bore cyl any bigger so I just cleaned them and used a cyl stone cleaner tool and put in standard rings as before. Question is now the compression seems really good but the starter wond turn it over. Im assuming the starter would turn over the worn engine but now tighter wont. Do I need new starter. I took this starter off a parts tractor tath was 11 horse. Does a starter differ that much from an 11 to 18.?
Thanks for any help

I would guess you need to check the valve clearance. Wrong and too much clearance will effect the compression release and too much compression on start.

Will the starter turn the engine with the plugs removed? Did you measure the ring gap on the new rings? Just wondering if someone gave you .010" oversize rings instead of std. rings.
You should be able to turn the engine by hand.
