my neighbors 8-26 Toro snowblower will throw snow 2x the distance that my 8-26 MTD will, same SnowKing motor, same red paint

only difference I can see is a funny shaped lumpy area in front of the impeller

how do they do it??

I could be the drive belts, engine to blower. On an Ariens we lost a belt - too lose and burned up - and got a repacement that fit at auto parts place. Machine didn't throw well and finally got an genuine Ariens belt - $$$ - but it was just slightly wider and the machine was back to throwing like mad. It was is a 10HP 28 inch.

I was just snowblowing lunchtime with 35 year old Toro walkbehind. It's an 8 hp 32 inch beast and boy does it blow snow. However, if I run it at too slow a ground speed, the snow doesn't go anywhere. I have to feed it a minimum amount of snow per second for the blower to work properly. Maybe setting the ground speed higher would get you better performance??

Better quality control in the more expensive Toro, impeller fits housing tighter in better quality machines.Engine RPM can make a big difference,so make sure yours is running at rated RPM,also all blowers will blow snow better to one side than the other, usually to the right because of the smoother path when sout is pointed that way.If you have a plastic spout, armor all it inside, steel spouts should be glass smooth inside and can be waxed with car wax,or sprayed with cooking spray. The impellor does wear after years and can be replaced and though I've never installed one I can see how the kits Paul mentioned could help greatly on a "loose" machine. (I currently own 8 various blowers and service the neighborhood fleet :)

Its in the design of the impeller, and the inside of the blower housing.

also the pulleys sizes on the engine and the blower input shaft. The have the right combination for impeller speed, and engine torque.

Toro has been making blowers a long long time, and over the years have learned what it takes to make a snow blower than can blow snow well.

The difference may be the speed reduction from eng to blower input shaft determined by size of motor pulley & blower input pulley.

His might be a two stage, while yours may only be one stage.

side by side the machines sure look the same, 8hp Tecumseh snowking, 26 inches wide, 2 stages

his has a fancy joystick kinda control for the chute but that doesn't look to make much difference
