I always use a 2 part epoxy first. Then if leveling is needed use a urethane 2 part automotive filler/primer. The epoxy with adhere to metal, old paint or primer really well. I use this on everything, tractor, garden tractor/mower or cars and trucks.

I use Kirker brand because of the price and it works!

With small items that I do not want to "wet" the gun for I have used a Touch-brite grey primer on numerous projects. I have also done several complete garden tractors with this type of "rattle-can primer" and it seems to work well for the purpose, it is a general primer for wood, metal or what ever.

All my tractors are "users" and so far the paint has all held up good. I get it at my nearby Auto-zone store, it is in a white and blue can. It also wet sands nice for use on sheet metal.

The type of primer you are using depends on what you need the primer to do. there primers that are sealers, there are primers that are a a leveling primer, then you also have primers that are a high solids, filling primer. You can then also get primers with rust inhibitors in them. As for the brand, that would depend on the type of paint you are using. I buy my primer and paint from the local farm stores, my tractors are not trailer queens, they are cleaned, fixed, painted and then used. Now if you are building trailer queens, to just look at, then buy the primer from where you are buying your paint, you are using a high quality paint, then use a high dollar primer under it, and make sure you match the type of primer with the type of paint you are using.

I only use a two part epoxy primer. A very good and inexpensive primer is the Ultimate 2k from marhyde. Put this entire link into your browser address bar:

Use the brand of Primer to match the brand and type of paint you are using.
