Folks, I've been around somewhat of a long time but I discovered something this past week and that is a bad battery can cause some nusiance problem. I've noticed in the last year my 2284 cub cadet was getting hard to start (taking a long crank to get it started) I figured I would need a new battery so I figured I'd make it through the season and change it out. It even seemed to be losing power I was thinking of trading it for a new one.Had to change out the battery because it totally died Man did it wake that girl up? Starts in three rotations pulls through heavy grass with power to spare and doesn't stutter when I throw the throttle forward. Goes to show you that you're never too old to learn. CT

My Craftsman 20 hp will not run with a dead battery.

Must have a coil and points type ignition on it. Yep a bad battery will cause that on one of those types.
I have a gravely 812 with a bad rectifier on it. for the last month I have been using it to pull loads of firewood out fo the woods and charging it up at night. It runs but not quite as good as if the battery is charging while running.

So what you're saying is I might have a bad charging system? Now bear in mind for the last few months I've been keeping it on a battery charger and working fine but recently it didn't seem to help so I had been jumping it and the battery tester showed it low so it was a progressive thing till finally the tester showed 8volts and the load tester pulled it to zero. Just asking. I don't know if it's points or not it's a 22hp Kohler Command engine. I don't know.

Yep, could be a bad charging system, but the battery sounds bad for sure. Start there. with a new batter and the engine running check the voltage accross the battery should be around 14 V, if closer to 12.6 volts then the charging system is not working.

Thanks, I'm a maintenance electrician by trade but DC power does some weird things it seems we change a lot of parts till we fix the problem it's called swaptronics. Thanks again for your advice. I'll check it again as soon as I mow again hopefully not soon with gas at $2+ dollars a gallon. CT
