There is a Bolens 1050 that has supposedly been completely rebuilt and comes with a rebuilt 42" deck and snow thrower. Asking price is $500. Is this a good price and what are the problems known with this model that I should look for?

My family owned a 1050 from new. The unit was really well made, however, the methodology used to transfer the power to the accessories took a lot of power. This taxed that 10 hp. "Wisconsin" to the max. In hard work conditions the users had to gear down to a really slow rate. If I were you, I would look for newer technology. Hope I'm not offending the Bolens lovers out there.

I"m primarily going to use it to mow with. I"ve got an 8n for the heavier work but my wife wants something to mow the "field" with if I don"t get to it in time. I figured it was a much heavier duty mowing machine than any of the newer MTD products. Comments?

The tractor will do fine. But I don't do much lawn or grass mowing with mine, so I can't tell you about the durability or quality of the mower deck. I use mine for tilling, plowing, and other yard work. I use other mowers for mowing grass, simply because the other mowers can't do the gardening and other yard work. I also have a 4000 watt generator that runs off the Bolens.

The 1050 is far heavier than anything you'll buy new from MTD. To buy a new garden tractor that is comparable, you'll have to spend $5,000 or more.

$500 is the max I'd spend on a 1050, and it would have to be in good running condition to get that much, not needing any repairs.

Bolens is a good unit, but, you cannot get parts for it. Bolen has been bought out by MTD, and they have pretty well discontinued any parts for the older Bolens tractors. The newer Bolens are MTD with Bolens decals

Your right, MTD doesn't supply much of anything for parts for these tractors. And there is nothing compatible or similar about the new ones MTD makes.

However, there are many people out there that have parts, and will ship them just about anywhere quite reasonably.

I've got several Bolens tractors, including a 1050, 1254, QS16, h14XL, and an 1800. All made well before MTD got involved, and before Garden way (troybuilt) had them. I've not had any trouble getting parts I've needed.

There are plenty of helpful people to be found here.

Thanks for all the advice. The mower as stated has been rebuilt, and just last year he turned new shafts for the mowing deck. So far I've found out it comes with 2 sets of spare blades and spare bearings for the deck. I'd really like to find a roto-tiller for it if I buy it. It'd be much easier to get in the garden than my 8n with a chisel plow.
