i just picked up a old kohler 14hp. when i turn it over its spitting the exhaust out of the carburator. i pulled the head, cleaned around the valves and checked to see if both valves are moving. everything looks to be normal. i put it back together & it does the same thing. how do i know if it jumped timeing?. and what would have caused the timing to jump?...

well i racked my brain all afternoon on this one. i bought this motor this morning. it had no generator/starter on it. so being in a hurry i grabed one from a kohler motor off the shelf. come to find out this generator was spinning the motor backwards causeing pressure build up in the engine. i got the right one on it now, and it runs like a champ. i guess i need to slow it down sometimes...thanks again

Valves cant be seating or damaged

Assuming it was assembled correctly the last time it was apart, it is almost impossible that it has "jumped time".

The intake valve may be leaking.

it seems to be building pressure in the crank case even with the head off, and the crank breather out. rings maybe?.
