i just found this forum, so heres a loaded question, i have a western auto lawn tractor with a 16 hp briggs, which quit running, the only thing i can find is a broken wire going to what looks like some kind of solinoid on the bottom of the carb, a replacement cost 69.00, in my personal opinion, this whole machine isn't worth 69.00, [ i paid 2100 for it in the late '90's] what is this solinoid, and will it keep the engine from starting, and is there any way to get it to run? 2nd, i need a reasonable replacement lawn tractor, i live on a farm so i have big tractors for heavy mowing, but brushoging the front yard of the house really leaves something to be desired in the looks dept. is "older better" on lawn tractors or what do you all recomend

That solenoid shuts the fuel off to the main jet in the carb. prevents backfiring.

However, you can remove it, and cut the plunger off in the center of it, then screw it back in. Thus it won"t prevent backfiring, so sometimes your engine will make a loud bang after shutting off.

Or you can try fixing and re-attaching the wire so it works again.
