My buddy has an almost new John Deere L110 lawn tractor. The left-hand rod which links the steering gear to the left front wheel sags too much, and when he makes a hard right turn it makes contact with the main pulley under the engine. That causes a pretty annoying sound as well as shooting sparks.

The rod also seems quite loose compared to the one on the right hand side--that one seems to rest above the pulley by an inch or so. We don't see where there's any way to tighten this up or adjust the height of it. There's a little ball joint at the axle--
could it be that this has been damaged?

Any help or comments would be truly appreciated.

Sounds like somethings bent
Check the toe in of the front wheels to see if its toed in or out
If one wheel is toed more than the other id say a spindle is damaged
most likely the one thats rubbing the main eng sheave
Some units have adjustable tierods
If urs dont adjustable ones can be purchased from your dealer
Id check the spindle in question to see if its bent where the tierod hooks to it
Good luck
If its under 2 years old the unit is under warranty

Thanks for your reply.
That seemed to me like the logical reason too, but we checked it out and the wheels seemed to be toed in the same, and the left and right tie rods seem just alike (though they run in the opposite direction) they just weren't in the same plane relative to the ground.

But there's a little tab by the wheel that the tie rod is pinned to and it wouldn't have to be bent much to throw the rod out of plane. It was a demo model that was purchased last summer so it should be under warranty. We were just wondering if there was some way to adjust it.

If it is bent, it must be a manufacturing defect--the tractor hasn't been abused in any way, and I don't think it could be just casually bent. It would take some real force.

I agree
Its most likly where the tierod hooks to the spindle arm its bent there
arm being bent up at spindle would cause problem you are having
I work for a dealer and I see no reason for your dealer not to cover it under warranty
Especially if this unit came from Lowes or Home Depot
