Just had a guy who does know what he is doing rebuild the carb on my Older John Deere 300 it is the one with the later serial number. The 16 hp single cylinder engine runs good, however, sometimes, it will start to leak gas out a what the guy said was a vent hole. Sometimes it runs fine and does not leak. He said that a new float was put in and was set correctly. Has anyone out there had the same problem and if so what did you do to correct the problem, or any help would be great! Thanks, Jack

Different Carb Same problem on 16 HP Kohler in reply to Jack in Michigan, 07-08-2006 13:21:44
First of all thank you to Ryan and Kenny for your responses. I pulled the #30 carb that was on the tractor off and replaced it with another # 30 carb but, before I did, I thoroughly cleaned and inspected the carb and needle valves, made sure the float didn't have a pin hole in it, and made sure it was set right. Everything looked ok to me. Put it all back together and no luck it did the same thing, after it ran for awhile gas just came shooting out of the carb. I know I am not an expert but, I have had better luck with these carbs in the past. Could it be something else causing my problem? Thanks, Jack

Tried all of your suggestions, all holes and vents are dirt free, made sure the brass inlet valve was tight. The holes in the needle valve had air passing through them, I double checked the float, I even weighted it down for about 15 minutes and no pin holes in it, looked at both seats with an eye piece and could not see any damage, it looked normal. I am getting pretty frustrated right about now cause I can"t fix it myself. Any more suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Jack

Sometimes people don't screw in the Brass Inlet Seat tight enough because a standard 1/4" drive, 3/8" deepwell socket gets tight on the float tower ears when turning it, mistakenly thinking the seat is tight when it is just friction felt by rubbing against the towers. Make sure the Seat is tight. If not, it will leak.

One way or another the needle isn't seating properly. Clean it up and it will probably be fine.

I rebuild them for people all the time. Did he use a Kohler needle and seat or aftermarket? I have had some Stens nedles leak. Is the fuel comng in fltered? Just a little dirt will hang up the needle. Drop the bowl and see if there is dirt in there. Kenny
