I just got craftsman rider with a briggs i/c platinum 19.5 h.p. I think its a 1998 model. It had no spark when I got it so replaced magneto. It runs now but very rich part throttle on up. Idles pretty good. No adjustment screws on carb. Is this a throw-away carb or is it worth the few dollars for a carb kit? The engine doesnt use oil and seems tight. just wondering if kit would work or if I need a new carb? Any help would be appreciated,Ted oh.

these are definitly not throw away carbretors. If you don't believe it, just price one. Rebuilt one on a large Toro golf course mower at work, kit was about $25.00, and it had the idle and load jets included in the kit. Be sure that you get the correct kit. The fuel pump engines have a smaller size jet and inlet needle valve than the gravity feed carburtors.

Hey Ted, I would pull the bowl on the carb and inspect for trouble. if the float is defective it my be stuck open. also look for debris. I think a maintenance kit is a good idea either way.

i think its worth buying the kit. make sure you clean all the jets and if the screw on the bottom of the bowl has holes in it. also the first two digits of the code on a briggs engine is the year of the enigne.
