When I move the shift lever to any speed forward or backward, the tractor operates fine under a load. If I am driving forward and there isnt a load , like going down hill, the tractor free wheels or speeds up and makes a noise from either the hydrolic motor or the valve body.Shouldnt the hydrolics hold the tractor back at the same speed as I was going up hill.

For early models, this is normal behavior on these.

These have a Hydraulic drive system, as opposed to the hydrostatic system that is most commonly found on lawn and garden tractors.

Later models had a holding valve installed that prevented this. A kit was available for early models. I don"t know if its still available or not. My 220 has always been this way, and I just use the brakes when on a hill.

The older tractors lack a holding valve causing it to coast down hills. I have a 1976 model 220 that will coast down hills. I also have a 1987 model 222 which has the holding valve and it doesn"t. Not sure what year the factory started installing the holding valves.
