Hello there,

I recently purchased a John Deere 116 lawnmower and the hydrostatic transmission is slipping. When you first engage it...it seems to work fine. It then seems to degenerate quickly with each time you engage it (moving it more sluggishly, slower, and in a semi jerky motion). Someone told me that it might have issues with the valve body or the fan? Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time,
Brad

Yep check the belt first. I've had that happen also. Are the fins on the hydro tranny clogged up with grass, dirt, and gunk? Then it could overheat thinning the oil and make it lose pressure. I had a JD 111 which is the same basic tractor as yours but with a smaller engine. I think the JD 108 was from the same chassy but I don't know if it had the same tranny as yours. Some JD 111s came with a manual tranny. There are places out there that can rebuild hydro trannys.

Thanks a lot for all your replies. I'm going to check the belt and also a couple other ideas some other forum users have emailed me. I do not believe its an issue with the fins of the hydro being clogged up with gras, dirt, and gunk. Thanks and keep the information coming,
Brad

Sounds more like you have a belt slipping. I would look at that possibility first.
