When I was a kid back in the 60's we rented a house and there was this old Snappin' Turtle mower that was so cool. It was a rotary mower with a wide steel roller across the back to drive it and you could walk behind it or attach a red sulky to ride it. The best part was this steel head of a snapping turtle that was about the size of a man's fist mounted on the front of it like a hood ornament. We had to leave it when we moved. I'd love to get another one for my dad. Does anyone know where I could find one for him? It doesn't need to be in perfect condition.

I've got several of them but not really interested in selling anything. Nice snapping turtle head and teeth on the front bottom of the mower. I've got one sitting here in my shop, specs are: Self-propelled with Clinton motor and a 18” wide cut. Has turtle head
on front. Distributed by Henry Diston. “Snappin Turtle” , Southern Saw Works, Atlanta,
Georgia. Model 2ST19R , ser. # A8584 I found a reference to it being made about 1956. I did see another at a tractor-salvage yard a few months ago - I'm not sure if it's still there or it was sold. The owner has a Landini tractor dealership, antique tractor salvage yard, and an auction-yard. I offered him $50 for it and he was, in no way, interested. He seemed to consider it rare and worth more. It wouldn't hurt to call and ask him. It still had the turtle head but the bottom teeth were missing. The owner is Jim McFadden. Website at:>Link

Was that the reel mower with the large, 8 inch serrated drive roller in the back and the two casters in the front? It had pipe handles and felt like it could run through a brick wall. I used one of those in the early fifties to mow grass on a hilly yard. It really had a grip. I have not seen one since then.

NO, these are not reel mowers. They were definitely a rotory. There was a shaft that came up thru the deck with a pulley on top. A single blade under the deckand a belt ran from the pulley back to the engine. It was all exposed, no guarding what so ever. Back in the good old pre OSHA days.
