Hey everybody,

I restore Farmalls, but I have a ca. 1980 Cub Cadet 1450 Hydrostat that I use for mowing the yard. Everything is in great shape (see pic at link below), but the engine smokes / leaks oil and is in need of an overhaul (new pistons, rings, gaskets, etc.). I have never worked on a small engine before. So I have 2 questions:

1) Where do I get an overhaul kit (local Case-IH dealer or internet?), and 2) Any tips on what all I should do and how I should do it. I gotta get crackin' on this thing before spring...

Thanks,

Tony

I am just finishing up a rebuild of a 1977 1450. Bored block .010. Turned crank to .010 under. Motor mounts were shot. The mounts are about $70.00 at the Case/IH dealer. When I took the motor off it only had one bolt in the motor mount to engine. The engine had vibrated around and worn one of the mount holes in the oil pan. I repaired everthing and fired it up last night. I only use Kohler parts. Cheap can sometimes mean bad parts. I have also seen aftermarket part that cost more than OEM. Example Wix oil filter for OHV kohler $12.50 at local auto part store. Kohler filter ar Sear for about $9.00.

Kent,
Don't be afraid of Stens engine parts, they are an aftermarket company, but most of their engine parts are made by an OEM, US manufacturer, plus they have a 1 year warranty on defects in material and workmanship where Kohler only 90 days. I have used them for the last 3 years and have had 0 problems with them and I can sell a complete rebuild kit for less than you can buy a Kohler piston assembly. I have had Kohler not stand behind their parts failures, so I am not as partial to kohler as I used to be.

Why is it when anyone comes on here and ask a question, there's always someone telling them to go to the registry?
Are they that hard up to sign guys up?????

What's wrong with just answering the guys dang question without promoting another freakin site?

Hmmm... Lets see 1450... 14hp kohler? I know Stens Rotary sells a good kit for the larger kohler engine. If you have an ebay account you can find the same kit for less $$$. But before you worry about the kit you need to take the head off of your engine and measure the bore so you know what size piston you need. I have a manual that shows you how to rebuild these and I can copy the pages and mail them to you if you need them. Mike.

Mike,

Thanks for the info. I was able to find a source for the rebuild kits. I will probably replace the piston, rings, gaskets, rebuild carb, new points, etc. That"s very kind of you to offer to copy those pages for me. If it"s not much trouble, I would like to take you up on that offer. I can pay you for your expense / trouble. I"ll e-mail you my address.

Tony
