How many of you out there actualy work the ground and mini farm, or actualy put out a garden with a garden tractor?? I am talking without using a rear mounted tiller. I have everything except the disc and a planter, the disc is easy, still made today, but the planter is the problem, brinly hasnt made them in years, good working examples that are not all rusted out and missing stuff are big bucks. There is a guy in Kansas taking old JD 6-12 row planters and making small 1-3 row planters out of them, if not for the long distance and costs to ship something like that it would be perfect. I set up for both cat 0 3pt and sleeve implements using a JD 330 diesel garden tractor. I plan to put out a nice plot of sweet corn, potatos and once we get a bigger place some pumpkins. I see that TSC has a nice but cheaply built push planter, might be adaptable to sleeve hitch use, but the wheels are plastic and the frame is light weight tubing. Might not like the stress of being mounted on the rear of a garden tractor.

I put in a couple of gardens using Power King tractors mainly. They have other duties around the place also. Firewood, snow removal, you name it. Got the Brinly plow, disc and cultivators. Even got a front end loader on one of my Power Kings. They earn their keep and never quit working.

Wow!!!! You guys use your tractors? I keep thinking I'm going to but have yet to find a use for them other than mow the grass, but even then they aren't that good at mowing.

I plant a 5-6 acre garden with a JD 317 and a rear mount Hydraulic tiller, it works great if you fall till and do it again in the spring just before planting. As far as planting, I have found that if you plant a large varity of items you are a lot better off with a walk behind planter, like the one made by Earthway. I have used one for 6 years now. It has 11 plates available, which should cover about everything that can be planted in rows, including pumpkins. The nice thing is that you can vary your row width, to accomodate the plants and make it easier to cultivate. The biggest problem I have with bigger planters is compaction of the soil which is not an issue with the walk behind, and it will suprise you how fast you can plant.

I use a couple of Sears tractors for gardening. Plow in the fall, and run the harrow over it in the spring, makes a really nice seed bed. I was using a Planet Jr. planting unit mounted on a Sears cultivator toolbar. I use a Custom 6 and SS12 Sears.

I did it quite sucessfully for several years with an orange & white SS12 Sears tractor. Was a bit of trouble to change from mowing to gardening, but it worked. I had the Sears 3pt hitch on the tractor and the 10" bottom plow, harrow and the planters & cultivators. The Sears planter was one of the best working units I ever used. It would plant anything if you used the correct plate, including okra seeds, I added a row marker and also modified the fertilizer box to use when time for side dressing the garden,. I used it for a 3/4 acre garden for at least 5 years and mowed for more years. I addded a pre emerge spray unit for putting out treflan when I planted the corn one or two years. It was a better garden tractor than mowing tractor in my opinion.
