Stan,
if it a litle round tin plate, it is hole for a low oil shut down switch, the hole is on all IC engines, the switch is mostly on commercial equipment, but for about $40.00 or so you can put it on your tiller, then if it gets low on oil, the engine dies, then you do not ever have a low oil engine destruction problem.

Some models had a low oil shutdown device that would go in that hole, in place of the cover. Those that didn't use it, just had the cover. It was wired to the ignition module to shut the engine down if the oil level got too low.

Usually those are found on generators, but I've seen them on tillers and other equipment too.

probably the oil breather or an access to the valves. Take it off and see...won't hurt nothing.

Ihe cover is in the oil resivor. If I take the cover off the oil would run out. I just changed the oil otherwise I would remove it. I was thinking it may be some kind of oil filter? Stan
