New Briggs 6hp....had to put a connecting rod in and I need to check on cam timing. The crankshaft gear has a dot on it and the cam gear has two raised lines on two teeth..the lines are about 1/4" apart. I think that the crank gear dot is to be between the two line on the cam gear. It started easy enough but is running rough and the starter rope ripped out of my hands a couple of times when the piston kicked back. I think it's too advanced.

Anyone know if my cam timing is right?

also too check the flywheel key and make sure its not partially sheared..when you put the flywheel back on make sure you installed that large cocave washer on it to keep the flywheel nut tightened down.good luck don

bo,
Is it on a lawn mower? If so it has to have the blade on it.
The timimg sounds correct to me on the dot between the lines.

It's from a pressure washer. I'm running it on a stand. I think that I'm trying to pull it against a full compression and I'm one tooth off therefore, the starter cord rips out of my hands. What I can't understand is the two lines on the cam gear. Generally, there is only one timimg line on the cam gear.

the timing is set correctly.if the engine is jerking the rope out of your hands tring to start it sounds like the compression release on the cam is not working .just a thought.good luck don

thank you. I think I found the problem...sheared key in the flywheel. That should take care of it.
