My neighbor"s having problems with a 17 hp vertical shaft briggs,in a 93 MTD It won"t turn over even while being jumped with another battery, even tryed another starter. With the spark plug out it turns over fine and if you just loosen the plug it will start and run fine. We figure it has to be the compression release, but don"t know where it"s located or how it works. If anyone can explain where it"s at and how it works or how to fix it, it would be greatly appreciated, or if there"s a site that has a parts breakdown . Thanks Gene

Gene:

Check the valve settings. Go to TDC compression stroke then bring the piston on around so it is 1/4" PAST TDC. Check your valve settings per the manual. On current Inteks, Intake valve setting is 0.003-0.005 and Exhaust valve setting is 0.005-0.007 - Not sure what yours will be. Before you go tearing the engine apart, find out what your valves should be and set them per the book. Then run a compression test. If it's OVER about 120 PSI, then your ACR is toast. If it's less than that, then most likely it's electrical in nature.

Check and be sure the valve clearance is adjusted correctly. If the clearance is right and the engine will not crank right you WILL need to open it up and maybe replace the cam.

Replaced the camshaft in a 17HP Briggs today. The camshaft has a lever on it which is spring loaded. The spring was broke in the particular engine. It had the exact same symptoms as u described.Briggs has actually redesigned the entire camshaft for this problem.Remove the engine from machine and then remove just the pan.Back off the rocker arms T20 torx driver and 10mm wrench.Remove the governor assy. Then pull the camshaft.Reverse the process, align the marks on the camshaft and crank gear.Add a little blue Loctite on the pan bolts.Adjust the exaust valve .005 to .007 and the intake .004 to .006 .Be sure the valve stem caps are in place.Have fun.

yep, did about 20-30 of the deere L100 series for the same thing. the current cam was re-designed as you said. new cam and lifters will do the trick. just re-check the grounds and connections first.

Gene,
I believe the compression release is actually a very small lobe on camshaft for exhaust valve. Turn engine by hand slowly with head off and you will see valve move slightly before t.d.c. If you have overhead valves, adjust exhaust valve rocker. If it doesn't have overhead valves, check face of valve and seat. Make sure no carbon buildup. Good luck.
