have mtd with 38 inch deck. had one bad spindle, so replaced with new one. other measures out true and not bent. put back on, and now shakes like a tractor with baler on it when engage blades. replaced blades twice, and still shakes. both mandrels are true and not bent, blades are balanced, but still shakes so bad you cant use it. runs great and smooth until you engage blades then look out. pulleys on top are also running true and straight. any ideas?

the deck belt will cause the vibration,a bad spot or burn't spot on the belt will cause it to vibrate

I think I would lift front end off ground and support it well, remove belt from engine pulley and engage blade without engine running. Turn belt by hand and look and listen. Maybe pulley flat spot or bad bearing in idler, maybe bad belt, maybe new blades are hitting deck, etc.....
Maybe belt routing is wrong. Did it shake that bad before mandrel replacement???

deck had bearings bad in one mandrel, other checks straight, no notice of wobble in either pulleys or mandrels. pulley and blades are on splined shaft, so no keys loose, crankshaft pulley checks straight with no wobble, has no idler, only two deck pulleys then engine pulley. blade engages as you let deck down. vibration is not bad in high notch, but as you let it down to cutting height, vibrates real bad. changed to new blades twice, and they are not hitting deck, belt is not vibrating too bad, and no loose movement from pulleys. (used to be friend borrowed mower, and this is how i got it back). any more ideas?

havent gotten new belt yet, but put another old one on it just to check. old belt took out about 75 percent of vibration ( outer lining is seperating from belt on this one) so i think a new belt will probably do the trick. have never heard of a belt causing this much vibration, but i know better now. thanks to everyone that replied with help, and thanks for a great site.

Are the jackshaft pulleys identical? Are the keys in place?
