I'm buying a 2002 Craftsman garden tractor. Its a 23HP Kohler engine, 48" deck. I have never owned a Craftsman tractor or mower. Are they reliable and hold up?

I've got a Sears Hydrotrack-GT and a Sears GT5000. The Hydro-track is going strong at 30 years old and thats why I bought the GT 5000 last year.

We have a 1993 20HP Kohler / 50" deck, that we've used every week during the mowing season on about 2 acres. Other than the deck spindles needing grease zerks, we've never had any real problems. Just this year we added a 23HP Simplicity ZTR to help the "old mower".

I have a Craftsman GT with a 24 horse Kohler, hydro & 50" deck. Bought it in 2000 and has 375 hrs on it. Mow 2 acres every week, occasionally pull wagon with pretty heavy loads. Take good care of it and service regularly. So far have not spent a dime on it in repairs (replaced battery last year). Runs like new. I know it is not a heavy duty tractor so I don't try and do heavy duty things. If the one you are buying has been used properly and you do the same, it should last a long time.

I got a GT3000 that I bought I think in 2001 or so. Its got that 23hp kohler. I bet I got less than 60 hours on it and maybe less than 40 on the deck. I haven't had problems except the hydro trans leaking since I got it and they "fixed it three times" so they (sears) said. But I noticed a tablespoon or two after all winter still. I gave up. The warranty expired anyway. I only use it maybe 2 times a year to cut my grass. Snow plowed my drive way a time or two in 20 below weather, when its real dry maybe 1 or none. This year my pasture weeds got away from me so I used it to cut 5 acres of weeds 2-3 feet tall. Had the deck all way up and crept slow but steady. I hated doing that to it but it did it. Thats abuse in my opinion. Won't do that to it again. With the low hours on it I can't give you a fair test of durability. But I kinda like it. I do think its a exageration to call it a Garden tractor. But thats only because of my experience with the old Sears and Monkey Wards of the 70's. I haven't changed oil in it yet though I know I should have. Still has what it came with. Still looks good and clear gold color. WTH, FWIW trg

As Mac, said, if you want this to last, you need to make sure the past owner has been good about the maintenance on this unit, if he did not, then what you do will have no affect on it. You need to use it for what it is designed to do, even though this is a big tractor, it is NOT a heavy garden tractor, and will hold up as long as it is not abused and used hard. I know other people will tell you they have done this for years and it works good for them, but I work on these every day and this my experience with them.

3 tips, dont abuse it, do the preventaive maint on it and with that engine use only the oil specified. Also if it has high lift blades, you might want to replace them with Gator blades.
