I haven"t seen it mentioned, but you should change the oil when the engine is hot, as the trash and impurities settles out as it cools. Espically on a non filtered engine.

most truckers i know use only rotella. i feel as long as the API service rating and the proper weight are used, and changed when they should be, most oil will work fine. my cheapskate buddy has 200,000 miles on his 7.3 diesel dually pickup. he uses only whats on sale and is rated correctly. he changes it often, never had a problem. i used to cringe watching him use no-name oil, but so far, so good.

Once was a die hard Pennzoil fan, especially when the can said, 100 percent pure PA crude oil. Those days are gone, and since Quaker State owns them, it seems the formula is always getting reformulated. Have noticed a varnish buildup in one car engine. I still use Pennziol as I have some stored, but lately in my lawn equipment have been using Castrol GTX thiry weight. Can find it at Pep Boys with a coupon for $1.59 quart. As others have said change it often, its a small investement to have the engine last.

I think any brand of SE or SJ oil is good enough but the secret is changing it as soon as it gets a dark tea color. Hey it's only a couple dollars to change often. 40% of the cooling on a air cooled engine is done by the oil, it can get fried on the piston so change it often.

Castro GTX is a detergent oil. Any 4 cycle engine made in the last 40 years should use a detergent oil.

I've used a variety of oils, and never had a problem I could blame ANY of the oils for. More important than what oil you use is to change it OFTEN, especially in a HOT air cooled engine, and even more so in models without a replaceable oil filter.
