I just repowered my lawn mower and need to know what are the basic wires that have to be connected in order to start and charge the battery. It is a 400cc 11hp. I think I need pos thru the key to the selinoid to the starter. Good ground and one hot of the flywheel to charge the battery? correct? Thanks for any help in advance.

As I remember the charge wire comeing from the flyweel needs a diode on it to work or you will burn out the chargeing coils .The simplest way to test is take a hot wire from the battery and touch it to the chargeing wire but only for a moment if the diode works you will not get a spark. If you get a spark go get a diode to put on it .I think Radio Shack has them. Then after you know you are getting power from it run it to the battery with fuse.

If you have two wires coming from under the flywheel, Check with an ohm meter. One will show a reading both ways. This wire is for lights when the engine is running. The other will have a low reading one way and ahighreading the other. This is the wire which charges the battery. Go to the plus post of the battery through a fuse. The fuse is to protect the stator if someone hooks the battery backwards.

The way it usually works is the red aka positive goes directly from the battery to one side of the solenoid and then from the other side of the solenoid to the starter. the ground is wired straight to the frame the back of the switch should have all pins aka connections marked depending on the switch you should see: b,m,l(optional for lights)and s. the s stand for starter b for battery you run a wire from the s pin on the switch down to the little connector on the solinoid usually on the side. As far as the charging system it depends on weather its dc charge only, ac, lights, or ac dc altenator. hope this helps. eamil me and i'll try to send you a diagram!

Pete,
On your switch it should have 5 spades. They should be identified as follows: B=fused from battery side of solenoid. M=wire from magneto or armature. S=to exciter on solenoid (small stud on solenoid). G= chassis ground. L=from stator for charging battery.
Hope this helps.
