greg is there any way you can go look on the motor itself and post the engine number.its either on the engine cowling or on the side of the motor.get those and ill see if i can help you out .don

ok greg is that spring youre talkin about a real small fine spring.if thats the one one end fits into the gov arm and the other in the carb the same place as the other end of the linkage hooked to the carb .all that little spring is for is to keep the engine from surging or hunting.is your set up with that little curly cue linkage on one end.if so thats the choke linkage .but one end of your long linkage hooks in the top hole of gov arm and the other fit into the carb butterfly.if it has the curly cue small linkage that linkage fits on the control assembly and the other attaches to the choke butterfly.the other long linkage hooks from gov arm to carb butterfly. let me know if i confused you .don

MMMMMMMMMMMM///not that spring in reply to don watts, 05-02-2005 17:38:11
on the throttle linkage is a lever that is connected to the gov arm with another spring and it pulls on the gov lever to open up the carb..its behind the plate that the throttle cable is attached to..it seems the spring has to much tension to let the gov arm do its job..its the hook up behind this assy that doesnt seem right..the arm moves when you throttle up and pulls the gov arm that is attached to the carb..are we confused yet...nothing shows me a pic of whats behind the bracket plate that actuates every thing..gregg

ok greg that control outfit your talkin about is where the choke likage fit .if you look its got a slit in it to put the curved end of the smaller linkage thru.when you choke it theres a arm that comes down and catches in that slit to choke it.the longer spring goes from the top hole in the gov arm to the carb butterfy arm.go to briggs and stratton .clik engines and generator icons.then klik owners manuals and ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST..go to engine ipl.then when screen comes up input your model number and the first 4numbers of the type and hit enter and see if that looks like the engine breakdown.see if thats any help or just confusing you more .don

Ok lets start over.. in reply to don watts , 05-02-2005 20:07:56
i know where all the linkages hook to..carb linkage with spring on it and the
choke.. it what moves the gov lever when you throttle up..behind the bracket the throttle cable is hooked to..the arm the cable is hooked to ..how is that arm connected to the gov arm ..all this is where you cant see it unless you tear it off..and the brigs site doesnt show that..in fact they show a different type of throttle assy..not mine.mine rotates and there model slides up and down...remember i have a j deere..111.. is every one having fun watching this..some one with a jd similar could chime in and tell me ...so i wont go nuts..gregg

ok greg im sorry i think i understand what your sayin now .on the control theres supposed to be a governor spring that attaches one end of the control then the other end attaches to the governor arm .and when you are adjusting the governorspeed theres the arm the springs attached to that you bend to increase or decrease the rpms.is that what your asking .if not well let somebody else help you because i dont think im doin you any good except confusin you .sorry friend don

Thats it..ctx in reply to don watts, 05-03-2005 05:50:29
its that adjustment i need...as it is now on wide open throttle and the spring is so tight it just pulls the carb open with the gov arm and the gov cant work..to regulate the speed.. the spring looks to be to big ..but i dont know whats been done to it in the past..gregg

ok gregg i sugest that you go get the right spring .then using a vibratach carefully bend the tang down a little bit so that when you kick it up on high speed the spring tension will hold tension on the gov arm .if you bend it up whenever you increase engine speed there is no tension held on gov . arm.another thing if you leave it on slow does it idle.the reason i ask is because u dont think someones fooled with the governor inside. don

yes it idles fine...if im mowing and i have the deck engaged ill throttle up for the speed and if i turn off the deck it sounds like its gonna come apart..so i dont thing the gov is working properly to regulate the engine under load..it doesnt compensate for the load..on the plate are some numbers 1 and 2 ..this is a setting for the throttle.and the gov arm.on the brigs site they have, c and d setting stamped on the plate for adjustment..so i dont know if its the same for the j deere engine in the 111..gregg

greg now on the number settings your talking about im not sure about that.if it idles fine but when you kick the engine speed up it goes out of control the spring is wrong or the tang has been fooled with or worst case scenario the flyball gov inside the engine is out .does it look like anybodys been in the engine .is this your mower or did you buy it second hand .if its second hand theres no tellin what they did.one key question was this mower running fine then all of a sudden just start running out of control.

Some more info in reply to don watts, 05-03-2005 08:38:10
the engine has not been apart other than me rediong the valves..yes it was all of a sudden rev up..i would venture to bet the gov has took a deep dive in the engine..i did bend the tang on the arm so the gov arm that controls the carb isnt in the wide open range..at least i can use it and just dont have wide open throttle..sounds like you diagnosed the gov..i remember the engine being so tired with the valves with no clearance it would have to be wide open to kick on the mower deck.and almost kill the engine.after i redone the valves it would kick on at an idle..so we will go with he internal gov system...its not working at all,,it doesnt move when you throttle up or down..gregg

Hey Don Watts....Gov fixed in reply to Gregg in ohio, 05-03-2005 10:38:40
well everything was in its right palce to begin with ...what i think happened is that the arm of the gov. might have moved on the shaft into the engine...i adjusted the gov shaft and tried several settings and whaaalaaa..its working..compensated for the engine load now and doesnt over rev..i did have to bend the arm to get the rpms up a bit but is really working you can see it compensate for the load and no load...had to be something simple...thanks gregg
