I picked up a JD 140 today that the fire dept. was selling. It appears to be a hydro. It came with the mower deck, snow blower, front blade, tire chains and a set of cloride filled duals. The guy that used it there said it needs a tune-up because it starts hard. Never owned one of these so I have no idea where to start. Tractors been sitting all winter. Engine is a Kohler K 301A5 Series C47712 Spec. 471608 .It has a champion H10C in it now . Any suggestions, Thanks in advance, PUTTER

Do you have intentions to use the deck? Would you be interested in selling it? I have a 140 without a deck.

one thing to check is the throttle shaft, these kohlers are good for wearing them if you can wiggle it back and forth find a kohler dealer or deere and get a kit to fix it,it will start and run lots better.i believe points are set at .020

Deere"s 140 is an excellent tractor. Congrats on your purchase. Am sure when you get it running and proficient with the hydrostatic tranny and hydraulic lift, you"ll wonder why they weren"t all built that way. Ignition system is conventional battery/points/coil ingition. Should not be a problem to tuneup. (Mine is long gone, repowered with a v-twin, so I"m pretty rusty on the Kohler.) Probably someone on here has the tuneup specs on hand.

Thanks for the advice Ray. I've been on tne weekendfreedommachine site so now know a little bit more about my perchase. Looks like I got a 68 model with the 12 horse. I brought it home today, HEAVY , almost 800 lbs according to wfm site. Tires on it might be loaded too. Hope 300 bucks wasn't too much. Got the battery on the charger and tried starting it, Guy says it floods easily, Yup. Where you at in Mi, I'm in Manistique in the UP. Well thanks for the post. PUTTER

You got a DEAL at $300.00. Very early 140"s with the K301 are magneto ignition. I know as Dad has one which is now on its second engine with Battery ignition.

Kent you're right , the guy at auto value told me the same thing today. The good news is I bought a new plug, put it in and away she went. I closed the valve under the seat and away she went, must need a little adjusting. All in all i"m tickled pink. Seems to run good, I do'nt notice any blue smoke, Floods easy like the guy said and Catmando is right the Throttle shaft is wobbling like all get out. Thanks for the post! PUTTER
