My lawnmower has as 18 HP briggs on it, been running good the last two days. This afternoon it will only run with the choke all the way out. Checked the rubber diafram in the fuel pump. It is located on the front of the carb, at the front of the engine. Can it be shot without having a tear in it?. Changed fuel filter too. Gas is getting up to the filter ok. Carb drain has gas in it. Boy, I am out of things to do to it. HELP Retired92

if you look on the carb itself theres a 5/8 nut on it .unscrew it and look at the metering outfit .it will unscrew out but i would just see if theres any dirt or trash in it.u may want to take it out and look at it and clean all the metering holes for trash etc.just a thought.

Hey, thanks a whole lot. Cleaned out the hole in it and it runs great. Now, is there a fix for a constant surge? REtired92

The surge is caused by a lean idle mixture. This is because the EPA made B&S set the mixture lean. A new engine will run ok but one with a little wear will not. Try adjusting your idle mixture. If that does not help you may need to enlarge the idle jet. If you do not know this carb will DO NOT try this.

Does it just surge under "no-load"? If that's the case, as described above, they just do that. Don't mess with it, you probably can't fix it. If it surges under load, follow the advice of John and Kent.

More likely there is dirt in one of the passages or there is a major vacuum leak somewhere. Also look to see that there are no wires contacting anything relating to the carb linkages.
