I got an 8hp virtical shaft briggs engine. it had a govener problem. so I opened it up and put in all new parts for the govenor/oil slinger. but I still have the same problem.the govenor will not operate. the engine stalls because the govenor wont give it power or it over revs (you know). So what did I do wrong. what did I miss. this would be my first time looking in such an engine. I have done alot of motorbike engines but nothing with a govenor.

Did you adjust the govenor after the work you did? To adjust, with the engine NOT running move the govenor control on the engine to the wide open position. This should pull the throttle shaft in the carb to the wide open position. You can check this by looking if the throttle is against the wide open stop. This stop is on the same part as the idle stop screw. Now, loosen the pinch bolt on the lever on the goveror shaft. Next, turn this shaft as far as it will turn is the clockwise direction. Hold the shaft in this posirion and tighten the pinch bolt. You are done. NOTE: The engine will still run to fast if the wrong spring is use in the govenor.

thank you. I did all that already . my problem is the govenor wont move by itself. I can move the lever on the engine to any position I want and it stays there. the govenor wont power up or down.

The govenor spring opens the throttle. The internal govenor mechanism shuts the throttle and when the two forces balance you have a set RPM.

I was just out running that engine. what happens is that starts at idle and will only idle then it proceeds to rev higher and higher untill I push the govenor lever forward back to idle

You did say you replaced the internal parts of the govenor? You still have something wrong on the inside of the engine.
