Hi Joe I have the same machine and it does the same thing. I haven't really looked to see where the noise is coming from but I think that it is coming from the clutch type lookin thingy mounted on the output shaft of the bevel gear box.
It is supposed to slip when the gearbox is over loaded.

Go to the simple tractors site and search Bevel Gear Box. Or BGB.

Sounds like you need to adjust the clutch or need a longer belt.
When the engine is running push the clutch all the way down and look to see if the transmission pulley is turning.
I also have a Allis Chalmers B-10 and more.

I like your page. now for my problem. the grinding is not when changing gears it happens after i let the clutch up. the tractor will start to move then the grinding noise happens then its ok as long as I keep going in that direction. no mater what gear I am in. it wont hapen on changes in forward gears only from forward to reverse.

I'm taking a guess here. I think it could be a loose pulley some where or slop in the transmission.
