Hi, I need some help. My elderly neighbor has a cadet model 2155 that won't start. I went over there today to help him with it. I checked and cleaned the battery terminals and then both cables. They were clean to start with, but cleaned them again. Battery is fully charged. I cleaned the ground wire and the engine ground connected to the starter. I also checked the ground wire for continuity and I checked the two fuses and they were ok. We tried to start it again after I did the previous steps and nothing. He wanted to take the starter off and do a bench test on it. I did and it worked fine, I tested it both ways, with and with out the solenoid engaging. I then put it back on. I then asked him to turn it over with the key and heard a pop. I looked at the fuses and the left one was blown. (red wire, red wire white tracer on it) I put another fuse in and he turned the key over and it blew again. I looked the whole harness over as much as I could see and it looks fine. I couldn't see any spot were it might have shorted out as the cover on the harness was in excellent condition. He said the tractor was five or six years old and is great shape. He did have the seat switch disconnected, but he said thats been like that for awhile. I told him I didn't think that matters, I am not sure. I was wondering if it could be the voltage sensor module? I don't know if it could be the key switch. I sure would like to know what it could be for him, as he said the place where he had it serviced before took advantage of him. I would appreciate any ideas or help in this matter. I just don't know what to look for since the ground wire and starter are working. Thank you very much.....tink

does the engine crank over? im assuming not, since you decided to bench test the starter. are you sure the engine isnt locked up? ive had elderly customers insist the recoil on a push mower was broken, when the engine is locked up. or "its leaking oil" and i found it was leaking where the rod went through the block.

one thing to check would be the wire harness to the headlights, make SURE there are NO BARE wires, sometimes they get pinched when closeing the hood, the next thing to check would be the neutral start switch, make sure the metal tab that pushes on the switch is there, check the relay, if it is corroded when you unplug it this could give you problems, clean or get a new relay, you said that the seat is disconnected, make sure that the wire ends are seperated from each other, and that they are taped up, and not touching any metal. the only other thing that i can think of would be the pto clutch, but i would check over the things that i have suggested.

Thank Rusty, and Magnum for your replys. The motor turns over as I hooked up the starter with a jumper and it turned. I will check the headlight wires. The relay switch is that the same thing as the voltage sensor module? I looked at the seat wires and he has them taped up and they are separate. I am going back over Tuesday. I will post what I find. Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it..... .tink

No the realy is not the same as a voltage sensor module, the realy is a little black box, up under the dash, usually near right side if your sitting on the seat.
p.s. i dont know if i said this yet, but it could be in the pto switch, i foregot that when the key is on, the power goes to the pto clutch before it goes to the starter.

I found out what was wrong. The switch actuator spring for the brake pedal was broken. It wasn't pushing the button on the switch in to let current flow to the solenoid. Thanks for all of the input I recieved, it really did help me and I thank you so much..... .tink
