Replacing 8 yr old MTD 18.5 hp/48 inch. Still runs good but mower deck shot (used to clear property before the 8N and brush-hog arrived).

JD, Cub Cadet, Husqvarna at nearest dealers. Which should I avoid and what to look for. Am thinking I'd prefer an "automatic" transmission. Are these true hydrostatic drive or more belt magic.

Rick:

Ask yourself, "what are my expecations of the tractor..."

1. What am I going to do with it? Pull carts, plow, pull other heavy loads.
2. How long do I want to take to mow my yard?
3. How long should the tractor last before replacing?
4. How much can I afford?

Note that there are differences between LAWN Tractors and GARDEN Tractors. The transmissions and tractor frame are typically the biggest differences. On a GARDEN Tractor, the trans is a lot beefier, because it is meant to pull heavy objects. If you are just going to cut grass, get a LAWN Tractor.

depends on what your willing to spend and what all you want to do. i whole heartly recommend getting a beefy used machine vs a cheap lightweight new one for the same money. ex a good used 425,445,455 john deere vs brand new sabre or something. as far as a super rugged tractor the 425 445 455 john deeres are super rugged fully hydrostatic, drive shaft to deck, hydrostatic cooler real tough machine honest can put a small loader blower, blade, etc on them real good machinces are very heavy duty the diff lock helps alot too. the 300 series is good and enough for most but again all depends on your use. no matter what brand you choose i recommend a heavy duty high priced used vs a cheap new key is fidning one that is in good shap and not a landscape beat up. i know new will be nice for awhile but jsut wait till it starts breaking youll wish you had an old workhorse.

I have a lot of small things in my 2 acre yard so I needed a 42 inch deck. Bought the JD L110 with the 17.5 Kohler and automatic. Very nice machine and would recommend it over the 4 previous machines that I have owned. Really handles nicely (turns easily and sharp and feels like part of you) and has plenty of go and plenty of power. Very easy on fuel. If I don't dilly dally around, can mow the place on one tank of fuel.

Would not recommend a high back seat on whatever you choose. On a lawnmower, you don't need nor want lumbar support. With all the bouncing around you will wind up with sore kidneys. Last mower was that way and never again.

You may not get the hydro but the Wheelhorse 315-8 is the one thing on the market as far as new goes that"s actually worth the money. Older Wheelhorses or Power Kings will give you years of service and do whatever is asked of them.

It would depend on how much you want to spend. If on the conservitive side I'd go the the Cub. If you want to spend for a great tractor go Kubota.
