I'm builing a hydraulic logsplitter and shopping for an engine,(5-6.5 hp) I love hondas but don't know if I should be spending the big money for one. I see B&S intek overhead valve engines are cheaper. Are these good engines? will I regret not buying a honda? thanks

I shoehorned a 10 hp. Intek engine into my old (new in '67 )Bolens garden tractor last spring. So far it's been working great. I haven't regretted it yet. On my log splitter, I just took an 8 hp. Briggs that was removed from a roto tiller because it had a knock in the engine and ran it some more. I only use it maybe one month a year so I wasn't about to spend big bucks on a unit that was going to sit around the other 11. I have since took it apart and repaired it so I figure it will outlast me.

I have a 7hp inteck on a troybilt that I work the hell out of every spring and fall doing custom work, and this is a very dependable motor I always change oil every 10 hours and keep stabil in fuel during storage no problems and a tank of fuel lasts for hours so go for it.

First keep in mind Honda has 2 grades of motors just like B&S does. Honda's OHC motor is a pretty good motor, but not nearly as well built as there OHV models!!!

The only B&S motor that comes anywhere close to being as good as a Honda OHV, it there Vanguard line.

I think you already know the answer to your origional question!!! If you want it to last for a long long time, you better get a Honda or a B&S "Vanguard"!!!!

Andy, Have no experience with Intek models, cant be any worse than the throw away junk they used to make, Honda will run the old B/S into the ground and outlast them, i personally have purchased both and the Honda will run at least 20 times longer than Briggs without touching it. MHO O.K. from personal use commercially and home use. Never had an oil leak in a Honda, Briggs leak from day one and spend more time in workshop until warranty runs out, down time in shop is not good when you rely on a machine, like a disposable cigarette lighter, if it runs out of spark or fuel, throw it in the bin. As for Honda parts being expensive?, not, because you hardly ever need them, B/S parts are almost the same price down under, a new B/S 12.5hp vertical shaft R.R.P. over $1500, Honda about the same and last at least 20 times longer, start fist time, EVERY time. CHEERS for now.

Sibby,
When I refer to parts being expensive, I am talking about air filters and such that you use a lot of. And as for dependable. I run a shop for a living, the most common problems with a Honda that I do not find with the Intek briggs is rocker arms break, spark plug wire ends burn out, Oil alert quit working, on/off switch breaks, and recoil pullies and starter dogs breaking. Honda engines are good engines, and unless you are using it commercially every day, is not worth the expense. And as for longivity, show me a 40 year old Honda still running, I have several briggs engine that are original from the 50s and 60s and still run good and start on the first pull.

JT, I have a honda 11 hp side valve that is at least 25 tears old and done a million hours, i have never spent a cent on it except oil changes and normal air filter maintainance, etc. clean the ignition points occasionally, starts first pull Every time even if you leave it for months, and never uses any oil between changes. The oil stays cleaner between changes, with any briggs i have had to add oil Every time and oil goes almost black very quickly? I have a 5hp honda ohc that has countless hours on it, it works hard commercially pressure cleaning and only stopped once, water in carby, My fault O.K.Honda is the best cause you only spend your money Once, Not Over and Over and you can rely on it, I hope B/S have done their homework with their outboard motors, every one they sell they throw in marine insurance with the deal, a set of oars to get home. No i am sorry, i have wasted TOO much money on dud B/S rubbish, Do they still insist on putting carbys on top of the fuel tank in smaller engines? what a farce, tank and carby buckle, replace diaphram etc, what a disaster of an idea, whats wrong with gravity, its free. Matey, i could go on an on, but i would fill an encypledia LOL. cheers for now.

A briggs Intek engine is one of the better engines on the market right now. They are a slant cylinder OHV engine like a Honda. If you take care of it, you will not regret saving the $s over the Honda. The start easy, run smooth and quiet. You will not regret it. Plus replacement parts a lot lower priced than Honda.

Go with the Honda. Alot easier to get to the carb. to clean out old fuel after it sits. Which happens on a log splitter. And they are alittle quieter.
