Does anyone have a good way to lift up a garden tractor to change the mower blades? I tried those car ramps but they don't go high enough and the ramp gets in the way. A jack is a little unsteady and doesn't really go high enough either.

I'm using a come-along to lift it from a frame I made by putting two 10' 4X4 posts 3 foot in the ground and placing a 8' 4X4 post across the top (pinned to the top of the uprights so it will not come off). Use a safety chain once it's up. I'm having problems with the cheep come-along slipping when lowering the unit lately.

I really looking forward to having my tractor fixed and I will use the boom pole to lift the mower.

Yea...Take the deck off, that way you can clean it also...If it is difficult to remove the deck, get a WH, it takes me less than 30 seconds to take a 48" deck off my tractor and flip it over to remove the blades and clean the deck. I know on a friend of mine's JD, it is EASIER to pull gator teeth than take the deck off....

I have some good thick ropes,2 pulleys, and a tree, tie one pulley to a good thick tree branch tie one rope(about 6 FT.) from one side of the axle to the other, tie the other pulley to the top of that rope, then sring the other rope thru the pulleys, then lift away, and tie it off. works great (if you have a chain host I would use that)

I have a Simplicity and several Speedexes, pull a couple of pins, unhook the belt, slide the deck out, flip it over, change the blades, check and clean the deck, hook it back up.

I shortened the length of an old swingset frame to 60" and use a small ratchet hoist.I lift the front end with the hoist hooked to a short chain attached to both sides of front axle and hook a safety chain to the top of the swingset once up.This will allow you to lift a tractor nearly vertical on its hind wheels for deck maintenance. Also handy for changing a tire etc.
Common sense safety precautions apply.

Simple. Just tie a strong rope to the front end, then tie the rope to a rafter or limb, take the mower out of gear, roll it forward, it will lift itself. When you get it to the desired height just put it back in gear and lock the brakes. Works for me.

Out of curiosity, can you remove the deck? Probably a good idea, as you can do a good bit of other maintenance while you're there. (like clean and lube the spindles, untangle garbage from the arbors, lube the linkages, and clean the underside of the tractor)
Hope thar helps,
AP

I have never actually done this but a neighbor used to do it all the time. He would tie the front of the riding mower to his garage door and just lift it up as far as he wanted with the electric opener. My fear was that I would bust the door. He had the typical 9' wooden door.

I got me 4 pcs of RR tie, nailed chocks on them. Jack her up and put them under wheels. Plenty of room. I have changed the blades with just the deck in the up position.

My way is a two-person job but it is quick and works:

Set the brakes, block the back wheels, lift the front of the tractor with good old fashioned elbow grease. Have someone hold up the tractor while you change the blades. Have your tools close by so the person holding up the tractor doesn't have to fight the off-balance you get when the nose in up in the air. Takes less than five minutes to change blades. Make sure your gas cap is on tight before lifting.

when it comes time to change them blades i let my girl-friend mow the grass, and without failure, she always rolls it down along the road on a bank. all i do is run down with the tools and change them quick and right it up and get it running again !!!! oh by the way,,the girl-friend is so good at jumping off it in time, i lend her out to my neighbors when they want to change thier blades !!

My wife is a little too slow for that these days. Will your girlfriend ride my tractor?
