I have an early 70s john deere 110, 8 hp kohler which wont charge. Not only will it not charge, it'll fry a new battery in a matter of weeks. It has the normal 12 volt system... rectifier, coil, solenoid and so on. Im lost! Any suggestions?

Do you have lights on your tractor & are they working? If they are out the battery will cook from the generator.

Sounds like the rectifer is shorted out and putting out AC to the battery instead of DC.
Use a voltmeter to check for this. With the engine running and the battery hooked up an AC voltmeter reading across the battery should be very low, probably less than .5 Volts. If high (over a few volts) a new rectifier is needed. Have not done this test, working on theory here, but should work.
