Have even had key (Woodruff) half cut into and it wouldn't start. Pull the flywheel and check. Amazing how sensitive the timing on these engines is.

Have you hit any obstacles hard lately? Usually that't what does it. The blade hits an obstacle, stopping the crankshaft, but the flywheel is a lot of mass and it keeps going.....damaged, broken woodruff.

Might look at flywheel key for a start.

Normally backfire means timing is off.ie, spark not at the right time with compression.
