JD LX 172 Engine shuts off when shifting into gear

Recently bought an older JD LX 172 and now the engine shuts down when try to shift it into gear. Never was a problem before, only thing that had been done lately was oil change. HELP!!!

Only thing I can think of is that you messed up the seat sensor (broke, disengaged, shorted to chassis) If you get outta da seat, it stops. Other sensors keep you from starting (brake/clutch not depressed, or trying to start with PTO engaged).

May not be directly at the seat. You may have disturbed wiring that goes to the seat that"s in the engine compartment, behind the dash.

Did you clean the air filter? How about oil filter? Did you change it too and maybe bump something.

Did you jack the mower up? Jack cut some wiring? Any plugs, anywhere, disconnected, loose.

If you don"t have any sensors, your engine is either too lean, idling too slowly or has inadequate compression to accept the load of the blade.
