I have a chance to purchase an older MF 14 with the hydro drive that worked three years ago. How do these drives hold up. Are they worth anything?
I'd appreciate any information on how good any hydro drives are.
Thank you,
David

Snapper and MF got together quite a long time ago, so more than likely it is a Snapper GT or YT series tractor, if it is, it is a fair little brute. Good luck

What year is this tractor and is it a hydraulic drive or a true hydrostatic? Up to the early 90s the MF lawn + garden tractors were made by Ingersoll (previously Case). I don't know what year they started to be made by Ingersoll/Case.

Boyd,
I'm guessing it's a late 80's something. It has a 14 horse Kolher mounted inline with the frame with a driveshaft that goes to the hydro unit on the front of the trans.
Thanks for any information,
David

I agree with Bob. I have a Sundstrand Hydro in my 1984 Cub. Have had NO problems. Do as Bob suggested, and change to oil & filter with the recommend oil & proper Hydro filter and you should be Good to Go.

Those older hydros, many built by Sundstrand, are nearly bullet-proof. About the only way to "kill" them is to get a bunch of water or dirt in them, or run them with low oil. If you get the tractor, drain the oil, change the hydro filter, and refill it with the proper oil.

They are almost always much tougher than anything "consumer quality" that you can buy today.

Thanks guys in reply to Bob, 07-30-2004 08:33:48
I feel better now about picking it up. Very nice tractor with a 14 hp Kolher engine that needs rings at least.
Thanks so much,
David
