John Deere 318 - better than the new Deeres?

I am planning to spend about $2,500 on a riding mower and am considering either a new JD or a used model 318. Assuming I can locate a good condition 318, I am interested to know if it is going to be better than a new, lower-end John Deere - even if the 318 has 750-1000 hours of wear?

A used 318 is very expesive. It has an 18hp onan twin. You won't be happy with a used one, even if the hours are low. When the engine needs an overhaul, you won't believe the price of parts for it. Besides, the rear diff is aluminum. The one i had was a 1987 model. It only had 620hrs on it. I don't know why people like them so much. I now have a ford LGT14D. 3cyl shibaura diesel, liquid cooled, 14hp, hydrostatic trans, with hi/lo range. The eng and trans/diff is cast iron. The 318 had an electric clutch to engage the mower deck. My ford has a live pto with a gearbox to engage it, and a live pto on the front for a front implement. My ford, with the larger mower deck, the 46" plow, wheel wieghts, chains, full dash instrumentation was $6200 in 1988. I have seem them used with under 1000hrs for 2-3 grand. My ford will outmow/push/pull or perform anything way better than the best 318 out there. I pull cars uphill with the ford. The 318 i had just made a lot of noise, and ran hot. Hope i have helped you out somewhat. I could send you a picture of the ford if you want. Rich D.

You have a very nice heavy duty tractor. This tractor is manufactored by Shibaura. It is made entirely in Japan, for Ford. It has a shibaura 14hp 3cyl liquid cooled diesel. The perkins diesel engine company merged in the early 1990s. Perkins diesel engines of the 103 series are identical, and are more readily available if you ever need a replacement. I have a 1988 14D. It was available with a 44 or 48" mower. Also Power steering was an option on the 14D but standard on the 16D. 3pt hitch, plow and snowthrower also. There is no engine temp gauge, only a light. I installed a gauge on mine. You can get a small gauge kit from the auto parts store. There is room to the right of the fuel gauge, also an option. My friend gave me mine for free. My machine cost my friend 6200$ without the power steering and three pt hitch. I have the big mower and the hydraulic plow. I also have two spare engines from toro fairway mowers. 16hp Perkins diesels. Theese are easy to come by. Mine just turned 500 hrs. You will be more than satisfied with your machine. It will pull or push almost anything. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me. Rich D.

OK, OK, OK. I see everyone here has an opinion that matters but I guess I'll make an amatuer attempt to answer the questions at hand - and just so everyone understands my opinion doesn't matter just ask my wife. I prefer the 318 over any big box store L series John Deere. My father worked for John Deere for 34 years and has told me that yes John Deere does make these tractors themselves in the TN facility by non-union labor (to save on cost I guess). They are the old Sabre line that they made a few years ago that never did very well. I guess people wanted them to say John Deere instead of Sabre so they decided to remarket the tractors painted JD green and labeled as JD. If I were to buy a 318 I would look for a late 80's early 90's with as few hours on it as possible. Once those 18's get close to 1,000 hours on them you can bank on them needing a rebuild shortly there after. Good luck with your purchase whatever it may be.

Agree with your input Ron, however, JD was not forced to enter the low end market, they chose to. And by doing so due to greed, they only cheapened their product and lost their good reputation of the past.

The low-end JD "L" series aren't even made by them. JD was forced to compete with Craftsman and Murray and the like and believe me, they aren't close to the old JDs.

And Kohler engines aren't what they once were either. The best engines in mowers today are Honda and the high-end B&S. Kohler is a very distant third.

Hondas??? hahahahahahahaha, they may be good, but I do not want to have to go to the bank to finance when I need new filters, etc. I do not know why you all think Honda is so great, they will all last a long time with proper maintance. Honda is like MTD, when you need parts, look out, they are expensive to service and repair. exapmples:
Air filters-18-20.00 ea.
Recoil starters-50-60.00
conn rod-35-45.00ea

as usual you are half right. the new L IS made by deere in tenn. they are a consumer grade version of the LT line. but you are dead on about the quality level. big difference between a skylark and a roadmaster, even though both are buicks. you are also right that they are built just to fight with craftsman and such. deere wants to be in all markets. bad move. the new kohlers are far better than new briggs, so you lose there. the best engines these days are kawasakis and hondas. we at the shop all feel that the old 300 and lx were better than any new deere. as with everything, new and improved means half as good and twice as expensive.

Read through the archives here and you'll find lots of people having problems with Kohlers. The B&S ELS/Vanguard engines are nearly trouble free.

I agree Kawasaki makes good engines but there are very few of them in $2,500 mowers, which is what he was asking.

I just bought an L110 auto with Kohler 17.5 HD with cast iron sleeves. I shopped more for this mower than anything I can think of for the last 15 yrs. Main reason was I didn't really need one. Wanted to retire the existing one and use it for mowing the pond dam and other heavy chores. And since I have had riding mowers for the past 25 years, I knew what I wanted and didn't.

Additionally, I have 160 cedar trees in a developing "live fence" and I wanted to be able to mow between and around them and around shrubs and trees in the yard.

The 17.5 hp Kohler is plenty of power for this peppy machine. It is very comfortable to drive and handle. My wife even started mowing the yard (without asking) because it is so much fun to drive.

The undercarriage is simplistic yet well built and appears to be very reliable. Fuel is about 2 acres per gallon if you don't spend a lot of time fooling around. I even think the JD dealer lets you try a mower for 30 days with a 100% refund satisfaction guarantee. $1750.

The problem with mowers is that all their parts wear out. So if you rebuild the engine, the drive line is still old, and the deck is old, and the steering is old. You just keep forking out bucks and when it breaks, your lawn gets real tall real fast.

My 2c.

Mark

no worry there. 1000 hr engine in 500 hr tractor. just do not abuse these units. fine for mowing, but don't fair well in abusive areas. got a buddy that just got an L 100 from me to mow around the trees at his christmas tree farm. seems to be ok.

txblu makes a good point. It really stinks when things break when the grass is growing.

We have a new husquevarna backup for when our old JD is in need of repair.

I bought the articulating Husquevarna for such a reason but returned it. I liked the mower but there were too many things turning too fast under my feet with only a plastic shield. One of the pulley's came off and scared the tar out of me. Bought a JD L110 instead. Love it, but it is a different critter.

I am not a JD fan, but if you have a new Huskervarny for a backup when the old JD is in need of repair, do you ever use the new one????

48" wimp vs. 60" diesel with power steering. I have to use the JD to jump start the backup we use it so infrequently.

The cup holder on the new one is a nice feature however ;>)

Why don't they put pull starts on these stupid little engines? This would make my life so much easier.

EWB - Click on the link below to read up on the 318. Also the site "joe" listed is good. Then compare to new ones. New is nice, but there's something to be said for the older units like the 318 as well. - Dave

I'm biased, but I would lean toward the 318.

The older deeres were built so much better than todays that people frequently consider the engine and transmission to be wear parts. In other words, if you wear out the engine it's worth it to replace it instead of getting a new tractor. Parts are readily available from any JD dealer.

Also, I didn't know you could get a new Deere for $2500.

There are a lot of opinions on this in this forum. I'm biased and have a jd dealer less than 4 miles away so parts are easy. If you want more biased opinions check here.
