The connector hole on the pump shaft was out of round so we disassembled the unit and I got the hole filled and drilled. The unit was reassembled and won't pressurize. Are there any necessary steps in reassembly that aren't obvious or does the system need to be primed/bled so that there is hydraulic pressure?

Thanks for any help.

When you put the pump back on did you put the flat side of the pump housing on the right side of the tractor when you are sitting on the seat. If you reverse it you won't get any pressure.

Thanks for the reply Richard and I apologize for my density. The pump housing split fore and aft with the power shaft coming out of the foreward section and the drive shaft coming out the aft and into the trans. I don't quite see what could've been switched left or right. The only pieces to come out were two sleeves with what looked like bullet casings and plates and I believe we lined them up the same as they came out.

Can you tell it's my first time ripping a hydrostatic pump apart?

I'm not quite sure what you built up but on the very front of the hydro where the drive shaft connects their is a charge pump, connects with two bolts and is almost egg shapped. Inside this small housing is a gear which pumps the hydro. This housing about 2 inches by 4 inches and about 2 inches deep has one side that is round and one that is flat. The flat side must be on the right side if you was sitting on the tractor. It is easy to turn this housing around and then the charge pump won't work. This housing has a rubber seal on the front where the input drive shaft comes in.

Now then if you tore the hydro apart and you were into the guts there are two amost identical assemblies with pistons in them that rotate, one being the pump and one the motor. The pistons run again plates and these plates look almost identical but should not be reversed.

Hopefully you just have the charge pump housing reversed and that is why you aren't getting pressure. It is not necessary to prime them if everything is correct it will prime itself.

Hope this helps, if not give me some info on what all you did. I rebuild them but I wouldn't atempt it without my manuals.

Richard,

Ahhh, the lightbulb goes on! I didn't realize that little egg shaped thingy was the charge pump. I will look at its placement tonight. I did rip the unit apart last night and "discovered" that there are 2 different plates. I should be able to finish reassembly tonight and I'll post how well it works (I hope). Thanks for the info. It has been helpful.
