i have a mtd tractor and the hydro-static tranny is bad in it. I've already put new belts on it and made sure the plastic fan was intact and clear of derbis. No keyways sheared! The only thing thing i didnt do so far was to change the oil in the tranny. This is what is does..., it goes fine up the hill on the first pass or two but then it dont want to climb any more. it still goes on level. The tranny part number is ( there are 3 sets of numbers on the tag on the tranny) top left 718-0255A top right 313-0650 and on the bottom 7093T2580. I got a bunch of questions, Are these hydro-gear trannys rebuildable and can you get parts for them? Does anyone know where i might be able to find a good used one? What useually goes bad inside these trannys first? How do you change the oil in one of these? Dont see a filler plug. I think there is a breather cap on it though. is that where i suck the old oil out and add new? I'm still thinking its a bad tranny. Where can i find a used one at? Thanks to all that reply. I hate to buy a new tranny but if that is what i have to do, well... then i guess i will

I just "thought" I had a similar problem and ordered the shop manual from Tecumseh/Peerless. The manual gave pretty good coverage of all transmissions except the hydrostatic and on the last 2 pages they whipped out the crying towel.

The manual was printed in 2002 and they said that their current philosophy was to change them out. They gave several tips as to what your problem could be excepting the transaxle.

Well on this wwww like no more than a week or two ago, I got a tip about a repair kit for the Peerless 200 series and I went to my local lawnmower shop and sure enough the kit was available at $25. It contains the correct oil and amount of it and a bellows assy. Back up thru the posts, right here, and you should find it.

Additionally, respondents posted 2 sites where one could obtain a reconditioned unit.

So there are 2 alternatives for you.

PS: My problem was a loose (worn out) belt.

It takes 81 ounces of 20W-50 oil I'd give that a try first. Looks like the breather pipe is the only place to remove the old oil. Yes they can be rebuilt. Also there is a filter inside but you have to take it apart to get to it. I'm sure you've double checked all linkages and the overide lever for pushing the tractor? See if changing the oil will do the trick and go from there.
