Jon, You have a 5 hp model 5000. I own one of these, (though a 3 hp 3000) and 4 attachments. You have a shift lever in front of the seat with four positions... From back to front,,, Rev, Neutral, Low forward then High. You have a lever on the front left... This is your clutch. It is called a "Ball Lock Clutch" If you don't get traction, the belt is loose, and to adjust, you lower the drive shaft to tighten... If you have to hold the clutch back to make it go STOP!!!, your belt has worn out on the thin side. Go find a short 5/8's (thicker) belt before you burn out the clutch!!! ALSO VERY IMPORTANT.... The cluch sleeve has to be oiled each use!!! There is a hole in the clutch pully for oiling... If you have never seen it before, it might take a few minutes to find with a flashlight, then it will all make sence, I usually use a heavy oil (80wt) in a needle tip can. The book (I believe) suggests 20w oil for the engine. I use straight 30 wt non detergant, and flush (and in your case clean) the engine with diesel. Only run the engine for about a minute with diesel in the crank case though!!!
Hope that helps,
Adam
PS I might have a grader blade that I might sell.....

Back many years ago (about 40 or so), the local amusement park had a kiddies ride featuring Bantam tractors! The park constructed an area with outlined ways for the tractors to run in, gravel covered roadways, off on a knob from the rest of the rides, etc. When the park closed, i managed to get one of those tractors for $50. The tractors were made by Bantam Tractor Co. They had a small vertical engine, i can't remember the maker. There was no reverse, just an idler pulley that tightened up the drive belt when a large handle was pulled or pushed. No reverse kept the "little darlings" from getting into trouble! The tractor had a drive shaft to the rearend. No way to hook up a mower deck, although it may have been possible, with lots of work, to do it! It was a one gear tractor, controlled by the throttle handle. I had one for a while, but gave it to my nephew, who ran it to death, crushed it, and buried it in his back yard! I may not be 100% correct about the things i wrote above about the tractor, but after having many machines since, one tends to forget specs about that older stuff! A local fellow has one setting in his front yard as a lawn ornament. I don't know if he'd sell it! I live near Pittsburgh, Pa., and there is another one i know about near me. Rusty Jones

Rusty,

Where abouts are you near Pittsburgh? I am north of Pittsburgh up in southern Butler County. I would love to have a Bantam as my father used to own one. That's what I started mowing on. I still have the rear end from it but that's all I have.

Your Bantam tractor was made in 1954. The Briggs number series engines were all uneven HPs. The model 9 is 3hp(also used on Bantams), The model 14 is 5hp (used on Bantams), The model 19 is 7 hp (used on Bantams), and the Model 23 at 9 hp (not used on bantams). The FB stands for flange bearings. Bantams are pretty hard to come by without attachments, let alone with them. Check out this Yahoo Group.

The engine on your new toy was rated 6 hp back then.
