Gary and Mike, dont mean to cause a war but you guys are crazy!! How can you say that taking off the rusty old flywheel, resetting the points, making sure you dont break anything, possibly having to reset the timing, having weak spark... is better than having a bolt on part? I did this conversion on my Jacobsen LT860 8hp and i didnt even have to take the points out. I just cut the wire, bolted the coil to the block and attached the ground. It starts with 2 or 3 turns of the flywheel now vs cranking for 5-7 seconds at least with the old setup.

My shop just gave me the coil and it had a slip of instructions with it $45 and its still sparking strong. Now get one of those new Champion Ez start plugs. They actually DO make a difference believe it or not.

Good luck!

I'm an old geezer and can see both sides of this. Everything I own has an electronic ignition in it except for an old farm tractor that still sees regular use. I've thought about swapping in an electronic ignition but somehow it would seem to "violate" the old beast. When you've grown up with points & condensers and know how to buy good ones and set them up right, it's no big deal. I like to know that even with severe arthritis I can still work with a set of feelers and those maddening little screws!

I know this is kinda old time thinking but I myself would rather have points and condenser as opposed to the electronic. Its easy to replace the points and cheaper in my book. I know, get with the times :o). Just never have converted over completely to the modern world.

Gary; I thought I was the only one that still used points and condensers. Glad to see I'm not alone. I just never have that much problems with them and when I do its cheap to fix.

I just installed one on a briggs motor that was having a hard time starting. It worked great. Easy to install. I got it from my father in-law and he bought it from northern tools for 11 or 12 bucks. I see one on ebay but it sells for more than that at auction.

Some of the larger briggs engines can not use the briggs electronic ignition kit. It depends on the model number of the engine. The aftermarket has a kit which will work on almost any magneto equiped engine which you may have to use.

My cousin installed one of those aftermarket kits on a Briggs with the alternator in the flywheel. Didn't work and he thinks its because of all those extra magnets passing the coil. This is just my 2c.

Not positive if it's available for that exact engine but B&S sells a points to electronic ignition conversion kit. Any small engine shop can sell you one.
