I am considering to buy a red 582 Cub Cadet. What weaknesses should I be on the lookout for? What makes the red series different that the yellow series?
Thanks for any info!!

The 582 special was similar to the 582 except it had the Peerless transaxle like the Ford/Jacobnsens and 110/112 John Deeres. The regular 582 is a great machine as long as you maintain the engine (change the oil very frequently and don't overheat it). I was concerned with mine but it's been no problem since I bought it in 1992.

they are red because it was the last year that IH made the cub cadet it was the end of a 20 year period of IH CUB CADETS

Yer 582 is a B&S twin powered gear drive machine with a hand lift, an intermediate machine between the 382 and 482 lawn tractors and the Kohler-powered 682, 782 and 982 garden tractors. 582s had the "good ol" sturdy cast iron IH trannies in them, the same trans as in the Farmall Cub tractor.

The B&S engine, given proper care, can run a long time without a rebuild, although it has a somewhat lesser rep than the Kohlers.

Of course, you want to check for metal in the oil, smoke, blowby, proper deck operation, etc., just as you would any used machine.

The 82 series marked an evolutionary departure from its predecessor, the yellow and white Quiet Ones, or Quiet Line, series. Lots of stuff was changed on the 82s, including the frame and engine mounting system. Only the 1282 with 12 hp Kohler single-cylinder retained the rubber-mounted engine. The smooth new twins were solid mounted again.

The 82 series legacy continued through the sale of Cub Cadet to CCC and then MTD, and tractors with the 82 series design heritage were produced up through the early '90s. In many cases, these tractors even had IH-marked parts, as CCC and MTD tried to use up excess IH inventory bought in the sale.

Hey Jim, what's the 582 special? I got a buddy at work that says his dad has a 582 special. Is it the same thing as the 582, or does it have a Kohler engine?
