Hi, hope someone here can help. I know a tiller is not regular part of this board, but can't find an appropriate one for this question. I've got a troy-bilt horse, 5 hp that I bought about 20 years ago, more or less. I've had to have the motor rebuilt once, about 3 years ago. The tiller cranks fine, runs very fast whatever the control is set on, slow, half-way, or fast. Then, when I engage the tines to plow, as soon as they encounter resistance, it almost slows , well, almost shuts off. I know I could take it to the guy that rebuilt it, but I've done it already. I think he did a good job on the engine, but knows beans about adjusting the carb. Like I said, I know this might not be the right board, but hope somebody out there can help.

Sounds like a governor throttle adjustment/problem to me. If you can't adjust the speed and it runs fast at all throttle settings, and drops when put under load. Maybe the governor was not hooked back up right or adjusted properly.

Find another mechanic. This might be as simple as a mixture adjustment, setting the governor correctly, or correcting a vacuum leak.

Be sure to check the gearbox. Troy-Bilt used brass in them until they went out of business. Many people, ignoring the owner's manual, used GL-5 gear lube in them. Unfortunately GL-5 contains sulphur which makes sulphuric acid which eats brass. This can cause the gearbox to lock-up.
