Have a LX 188 with never-ending fuel system problems. Right now, it will run for about a minute, then dies like it's run out of gas, will start right back up and run for a second. I disconnected the fuel line ahead of the filter, and have a very strong flow from the tank. Filter is new. If I disconnect the line from the pump to the carb and crank the engine, the pump puts out a strong stream of fuel. The only other thing it could be is the carb, which was brand new a year ago and has been fine until a week ago. I maintain the fuel system very well during winter storage, the fuel comes out of the same barrel as the gas for two farm tractors, a Chevy pick-up, and a Honda 5.5, which never have problems. The mower gets very regular use and burns about a tank a week, so I am sure the problem isn't bad fuel. Why does this thing have such bad problems? Is there anything I can do?

KB, try your shutoff valve, mine had a plastic one and there was a piece of grass stuck in there. They will pull apart but the o-ring might not be a safe seal afterwards. Not very spendy to replace.Mine also had fuel flow and would run for short time before it would stop.

Start it cold. Let it run until it dies. Pull the plug. If wet and smells like gas, it's not the carburetor. If dry, it might be the carb but more likely it's a vacuum leak, most likely between the carb and head. The reason it runs for only a second once warm is that the leak gets worse as the parts expand.

BTW, due to the 5 month summer here, all my yard engines sit with a tank full of gas for 7 months without any attention. Then, after 7 months, they start immediately. Gas doesn't really get stale, what happens is that it gets water (condensate) in it. Gas with ethanol in it makes the water problem much worse. If you can't find gas free from ethanol, use some STP Water Remover over the winter. It contains zero alcohol.

check the inlet needle and seat. you are using what is in the bowl, and it is running out before it can refill. after a minute, the bowl trickles full and it will run again.
